Kanpur Electricity Board to integrate AI for administrating electricity supply in the city

Jatin Shewaramani

Artificial Intelligence is proving to be invaluable across various sectors worldwide. Its application has now extended to optimizing electricity distribution in urban centres. Now, the Kanpur Smart City Project aims to enhance electricity supply efficiency across the city using AI enabled software system.

Under this initiative, 14 key substations within Kanpur are set to undergo meticulous supervision and control using the advanced system of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).

AI enabled system will provide efficient power supply and easy detection of electricity faults

Currently, in case of sudden power supply interruptions, linemen conduct patrols to identify faults. The process of locating faults and restoring supply can be time-consuming. However, this issue will soon be a thing of the past in the 14 substations of Kanpur. The SCADA system has digitized the entire electricity distribution network. With the assistance of software in the control room, faults in the supply lines can be promptly identified.

Moreover, using AI and machine learning, the software will also predict the extent of electricity demand in the upcoming days based on weather conditions. By the end of the year, the system will be fully automated.

SCADA system will allow seamless monitoring of the electricity supply

This cutting-edge tech will allow for real-time monitoring of critical aspects, ranging from high-tension lines to transformers and even individual consumer meters installed within households. With this, this will further enable monitoring from a central control room.

To ensure precision and comprehensive coverage the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company Ltd. has integrated the AI enabled system with each element. Substations, utility poles, transformers, supply lines and meters, has been meticulously mapped using GPS technology.
