Kanpur's metro project is powering ahead, with a key stretch now one step closer to opening. Authorities have just finished installing the crucial Third Rail power system on the elevated 5.3 km section between Baradevi and Naubasta. With tracks already laid and necessary electrical approvals secured, trial runs on this segment are set to begin by the end of January.

If all goes well, regular services from IIT all the way to Naubasta could start by March, finally bringing metro relief to long-awaiting southern neighbourhoods.

5.9 km Naubasta-Barra extension to transform South Kanpur

UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar also shared that the underground track work between Kanpur Central and Swadeshi Cotton Mill Ramp is progressing on track.

Another promising progress for South Kanpur's 2 million residents is, a ₹1,900-crore proposal for a 5.9 km Naubasta-Barra extension has been submitted to the state government. Prepared by RITES in collaboration with Kanpur Development Authority, the project includes 8 new stations and would link Corridors 1 and 2, ultimately benefiting around 5 million commuters.

For South Kanpur especially, it promises an escape from daily traffic snarls, offering a faster, safer commute and reducing reliance on cars. After years of anticipation, Kanpur's metro map is finally starting to look like the city-changing network it was meant to be.
