Ever since its inception, Kanpur Metro has been an ambitious project for both city residents and the state administration. The project, managed by UPMRC, involves the simultaneous development of two distinct corridors. One of the most notable advancements is the expansion of the high-priority corridor, which currently connects IIT Kanpur to Motijheel, and is now set to extend all the way to Kanpur Central Station. This significant development was recently announced by the state CM, marking January 2025 as the target date for full connectivity from IIT to Kanpur Central.

Final preparations are underway for the expansion, with test runs scheduled in the coming weeks. This extension will add five underground stations—Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central. These stations will be connected to the existing nine elevated stations between IIT and Motijheel. Notably, a single-way journey from IIT to Kanpur Central will be covered under 30 minutes.
