The new Anwarganj-Mandhana rail section in Kanpur is currently being redeveloped as an elevated corridor. After a recent meeting of railway officers, it was announced that the Anwarganj station in Kanpur is proposed to be named after the 10th Prime Minister of India, late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The work on the ₹1,200 crore project to raise the 16.5 KMs elevated track has been is progress for past five months. As per reports, the existing rail section features 15 main crossings, with a train passing every 10 minutes. This results in a constant roadblock and frequent traffic snarls in the area nearby. The elevation project, thus, aims at reducing congestions. According to the current plan, a box-like elevation is expected at appear at 15 main crossing line of the rail section. For the rest of the track, an embankment elevation has been proposed to cut-down the total project cost.
