2000 rice mills in UP to be renovated in a bid to improve the quality of produce

Muskaan Tekwani

In a first of its kind initiative, the government of Uttar Pradesh has undertaken the task of modernising 2000 rice mills across the state. These units will be upgraded with latest machinery and technology to produce high-quality grains that can fetch better prices in the market. As per reports, the entire scheme has been designed to meet Uttar Pradesh's goal of self-sufficiency in food and nutrition security. The facelift will simultaneously also boost employment creation and wealth generation.

Towards the goal of nutrition security

According to Sorabh Babu, Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies, private rice mills in Uttar Pradesh will be modernised, as per the set of mandatory provisions made by the government. The department will soon convene a meeting with the UP Rice Milers Association and millers to translate this vision as a goal for all.

Pegged to be the oldest agro-processing industry in the country, rice milling, is also one the largest players of the food grain industry. Modernising and upgrading the same will significantly improve the quality of domestic production and eventually, help to boost nutrition security.

New technology to improve capacity & quality of rice produce

Reports suggest that there are about there are about 757 large mills in the state, that have a milling capacity the drones over 4 tonnes per hour. The number of smaller units, on the other hand goes up to around 1,157, that have less than 4 MT per hour milling capacity.

The limited capacity at the smaller scale mills are due to traditional machines and these obsolete equipment also have an impact on the quality of the produce. Rice processed by such units does not fulfill the norms and standards of FCI (Food Corporation of India), thus selling at lower prices too. A machinery upgrade, therefore, will play a key role in improving the capacity building of the mill and improving the quality of rice.

For this purpose, the Department of Food and Civil Supplies will motivate the rice millers and engage them in use of technology. Soon, a criteria will be established in which empanelment of rice mills that use new machinery. will be considered. It may be noted here that the government will not provide any funding for the same. However, rice millers will be advised to take loans through MSMEs.
