A power struggle: Defaulters to get late-night calls as reminder to pay pending electricity bills

Khushbu Kirti

Just in case you have a pending electricity bill of over ₹25,000, be prepared to receive a late night reminder of the same. The Uttar Pradesh government has directed corporations to contact some 8,000 defaulters to remind them to pay up!

This comes after the power department's inability to recover overdue fees from customers. Which, in turn, has resulted in dues passing ₹45,000 crores. In order to straighten out this fiasco, call centre representatives will act on the given directive and contact anyone with pending bills.

10,000 customers reached in the past 2 days

Representatives of numerous centres have been instructed to call defaulters late at night in order to meet the dues. Customers whose bills have exceeded ₹25,000 have started receiving calls. They have either been agitated by the same or been prompt with their dues after the call.

Through 1912 helpline, in the past two days, some 10,000 customers have received this reminder call.

It has also been found that some people are unaware of the amount they owe the electricity department. Thus, the initiative is also fulfilling the purpose of letting customers know their payment amount and status.
