Century-old anatomy museum at Lucknow's KGMU to be revived after 30 years

Khushbu Kirti

Lucknow's renowned King George's Medical University (KGMU) is all set to see a few changes, and for the better, soon. The university houses a historic museum in its anatomy department that is soon slated to be resurrected after a period of 30 years.

The 100-year-old museum is renowned to exhibit a meticulous collection of some 480 specimens of humans, animals, and birds — the initial lot of which was shipped from England. However, it has not been functional for the last three decades due to the loss of various specimens throughout the years.

KGMU signs MoU with LU

KGMU has tied up with Lucknow University's zoology and anthropology departments for help so as to create a fresh catalogue of specimens. Once this is done, the museum is expected to open, first for the students and then the public once a week.

Set up in 1922, the specimens' purpose, as per KGMU officials, was to dispense to the medicos knowledge about evolution. The museum has specimens of anthropology, embryology, radiology, gross anatomy, surface anatomy, osteology, genetics, cross sectional anatomy, and so on, besides some rare samples. There's also an entire skeletal system of human beings and foeti displayed here.

In the right direction

This century-old KGMU anatomy museum plans to keep intact its rich lineage. At the same time, it wants to keep updating to align to current norms and modern developments, and here's the right step towards the same.
