Fasting this Navratri doesn’t mean signing a treaty with blandness. Lucknow’s restaurants have read the rulebook, found the loopholes that are perfectly legal, and filled them with tacos, chaats, cutlets, thalis and ladoos. Here are nine places serving falahari food you’ll never want the vrat to get over.
The rules of a fast are simple, no grain, no onion, no garlic, no fun. Lucknow’s chefs have been working on that last one. Falahari menus now come with tacos, regional thalis, samosas, a hi-tea platter and fusion plates that look nothing like penance. Sassy Canteen is one of the places turning restraint into a menu worth reading twice.
When- 12 PM- 11 PM
Where- Ground Floor, Metro City Centre Sapphire Building, Balmikinagar
Fasting is the one time chaat is supposed to leave the table. Ram Asrey brought it back with chene dahi bade, a falahari papdi chaat and a sabudana basket chaat that crunches like it has nothing to prove. The thali covers anyone who wants the full fast on one plate. Nothing here breaks the rules, which is exactly why it feels like getting away with something.
When- 8:15 AM- 10 PM
Where- 43/48, Nawal Kishore Road, Near Leela Theatre, Hazratganj
Somewhere between the vrat special samosa and the singhare ke aata ke ladoo, Alpahar quietly redefined what a Navratri fast looks like. Sabudana vada, chips and moongfali keep the snacking honest, the special thali keeps the meal respectable, and the mewa and nariyal ladoo keep the sweet tooth from filing a complaint. It is technically all falahari.
When- 10 AM- 8 PM
Where- 1/1155 L, Gomti Nagar Bypass Rd, Vishal Khand 1, Vishal Khand, Gomti Nagar
Kuttu ki puri and aloo jeera are the oldest fasting pairing in the book, which is why finding them at Novotel feels slightly suspicious. The rest of the plate holds up, samak rice, sabudana khichdi, aloo ki pakodi and a crisp sabudana tikki. Makhana kheer and creamy fruit stand in for dessert, with a lassi or fresh juice to wash it down.
When- 7 AM- 11 PM
Where- Viraj Khand-4, Viraj Khand, Gomti Nagar
Moti Mahal and a fasting menu is not a pairing anyone saw coming. This is the kitchen people associate with tandoor smoke and butter-heavy gravies, and yet it has a falahari thali on the table for Navratri. No onion, no garlic, no grain, and no sign that the kitchen is sulking about it. The thali comes together as a proper meal rather than a token gesture for the vrat crowd.
When- 8 AM- 11:30 PM
Where- M G Marg, Near Central Bank Of India, Hazratganj
Arbi ki sabzi and dry aloo are what a vrat thali usually runs on, so it is the cutlet, roll and pakoda at Madhurima that make you look twice. Paneer makhana and a kheera ka raita round out the special thali, and the extras turn a fast into a proper menu with options. Nothing breaks the rules, everything quietly bends the mood.
When- 8 AM- 10:30 PM
Where- Vibhuti Khand, Near Comfort Inn, Gomti Nagar
Fasting and a place called Ritzz are not an obvious match, and the kitchen seems to know it. The special Navratri thali is its answer, a full plate built entirely within the vrat rules, with nothing on it that reads like a compromise. No grain, no onion, no garlic, and still no reason to feel left out of lunch. It doesn’t dress up the fast or apologise for it.
When- 8 AM- 11 PM
Where- Gole Market, Mahanagar, [Multiple outlets across Lucknow]
Fasting is supposed to narrow your choices, which Bikanervala has politely ignored. Two thalis, the deluxe and the Navratri special, open the menu. Paneer sabzi with samak rice and aloo sabzi with kuttu poori follow, and then the chaat counter joins in with papdi chaat, tawa aloo chaat, sabudana aloo tikki and paneer pakoda.
When- 8 AM- 11 PM
Where- Ground Floor, A Block, Summit Building, Vibhuti Khand
Awadhi dastarkhwan is built on abundance, which makes a fasting thali at Clarks Avadh an experiment in doing more with less. The Navratri thali sticks to the vrat rules, no grain, no onion, no garlic, and still turns up looking like something a guest was expected. Nobody is asked to lower expectations at the door, and nobody does.
When- Open all day
Where- Birendra Mahal, Hotel Clarks Avadh
