Winter smog has emerged as a bigger evil than dropping temperatures in the state of Uttar Pradesh as an aggravator of respiratory issues. A pulmonary disease expert stated that "Though the cold wave has not yet set in, in the true sense of the term and minimum temperatures have hovered around 9 degrees Celsius; it is the smog that hangs heavy in the air and is causing problems for those with respiratory issues." He said that this could enhance the problems of those who are in the Covid and post-Covid stage.

Visibility in the state lowers with lowering AIR Quality

Western Uttar Pradesh has been reporting dense fog from the last three days and this has already led to a number of road accidents due to poor visibility. There have been several accidents on the expressway and pile-ups too. The Chief Minister has already directed all district officials to make arrangements for night shelters for the homeless and set up bonfires across the districts.

With respect to the rising levels of fog, state capital Lucknow has cemented its position as one of the most polluted cities of the state. Recording unhealthy standards of AQI at 193 units, city dwellers have been warned against the development of pulmonary infections and respiratory problems on increased exposure. People with medical history have been appealed to stay indoors to doubly safeguard themselves from the COVID infection as well as respiratory issues. Those stepping out have been advised to wear a face mask at all times.
