Indian Railways to introduce new baggage rules at select Uttar Pradesh stations

Even luggage within the weight limit may be fined; know details.

Indian Railways will soon enforce stricter baggage rules on the lines of air travel. Passengers will be required to weigh their luggage at electronic machines before entering platforms at select stations in Uttar Pradesh, with the final list to be shared shortly. Any excess baggage found during the journey or at the destination will attract penalty charges.

Weight limits will be enforced based on travel class:

Each passenger is entitled to a free luggage allowance, which varies by class of travel. Children aged 5 to 12 are allowed half the adult allowance, up to a maximum of 50 kg. A small marginal allowance is also permitted. However, there is a cap on the weight that may be carried inside the compartment for each class, as shown in the table below.

Oversized or overweight bags will attract penalties, and even luggage within the limit may be fined if considered bulky or obstructive. Luggage beyond the above quantity can be booked in advance and carried in brake Van.
