Succeeding three weeks of heightened spikes in COVID numbers, the last week has brought a sigh of relief for the city folks. With 617 new cases and a total of 2,317 discharges recorded on Saturday, the active tallies shrunk in the city to a count of 12,474. Now, the city houses the second most number of COVID patients in Uttar Pradesh and this tally is expected to take an accelerated downward trajectory if the current trend continues.

After the onslaught of the second COVID wave, the highest count of 6,598 infections was registered on April 16. Since then, the daily tally of new cases has been continuously dipping. Recently, the figure came down below 1K on April 12 and it is four days now that the cases have in the controlled region. Despite this respite being pointed by official records, the active patient logs continue to overburden the healthcare system.

On Saturday, 12 fatalities were recorded and the death curve has is sloping downwards now. The highest count of 60 deaths was logged on May 6, as a direct consequence of the high cases registered two to three weeks ago. Relievingly, recoveries have been on a steady rise and if the pattern maintains itself, the score of active patients will contract soon.

In view of the ongoing circumstances, the lockdown in Lucknow has now been extended till May 24. Additionally, a list of measures are being implemented by the administration to ensure that the dire effects of the pandemic subside as soon as possible.
