The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has decided to rename a city road after Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, following her return from a nine-month-long space mission.

The proposal, initially put forward by a local corporator, was approved during a recent executive body meeting chaired by the city mayor. The road stretch from the Sports College on Kursi Road to the Vikas Nagar trisection near ISRO's Remote Sensing Centre (RSAC) office will now bear Williams' name.

Lucknow’s tribute to the India-origin Astronaut

Sunita Williams recently returned to Earth on March 18, 2025, after an unintended nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Originally scheduled for a brief stay, her mission was extended due to propulsion issues with Boeing's Starliner capsule. Williams, along with fellow NASA astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore, was eventually brought back aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.

Sunita Williams continues to be a beacon of inspiration, especially for women in STEM. City officials expressed that this initiative not only honours Williams' achievements but also aims to inspire residents, especially young women, to pursue careers in space exploration, astronomy and advanced sciences.
