Knocksense Shorts | KGMU doctors devise new method to identify gallbladder cancer

In another crucial achievement, a team of KGMU Doctors has found a new method to identify gallbladder cancer with almost perfect accuracy. This new method has already found a place in the International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences.

It is noteworthy that the current method for identifying gallbladder cancer uses carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9). However, its accuracy is sometimes marred by the similarities between gallbladder cancer and pancreatic cancer, as it is associated with both types.

The new method, on the other hand, uses the CA 19-9 and carbohydrate antigen 242 (CA 242), thus combining two blood markers for the diagnosis. With this double marker method, the diagnosis accuracy has shot up from 82% to approximately 100%.

This method of identifying gallbladder cancer aims at significantly reducing misdiagnosis, helping in early detection, for better and timely treatment.
