The Uttar Pradesh government has declared January 14, Makar Sankranti, as a public holiday across the state. Previously categorised as a non-gazetted holiday, the decision was confirmed through an official order issued by Zuhair Bin Sagir, Special Secretary of the UP General Administration Department.

Makar Sankranti is widely celebrated with the tradition of preparing and sharing khichdi in households of Lucknow and other UP cities. Various social organisations are set to organise Khichdi feasts to mark the occasion, while temples across the state will host special events. Furthermore, the occasion will be celebrated as the first Shahi Snan (sacred bathing day) at Prayagraj's ongoing Mahakumbh Mela.
