Lucknow and much of Uttar Pradesh continue to reel under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 45°C in several districts. On Monday, Jhansi and Agra recorded blistering highs of 45.9°C, while Lucknow saw temperatures touch 42°C, making it one of the hottest days this season.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for severe heatwave conditions in Bundelkhand and Agra divisions, while a yellow alert covers 25 districts in western UP and NCR.

Sweat, sleeplessness and scorching heat

Humidity has worsened the discomfort, with warm nights adding to residents' misery. The combination of high temperatures and moisture-laden easterly winds has made conditions unbearable stated Dr. Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at Lucknow’s Regional Meteorological Centre. Coolers and shade offer little relief as even night-time temperatures remain elevated.

While relief seems distant for now, light rain is expected in eastern UP from June 11, potentially bringing slight respite. Until then, authorities advise staying hydrated and avoiding peak afternoon sun. With roads deserted during midday and power demand surging, the heatwave’s grip shows no signs of loosening.
