After the second wave of the pandemic wreaked havoc in the city, the authorities have shifted attention on strengthening the medical infrastructure. As per the latest developments, the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital in Lucknow will be expanded from a 400-bed facility to an 800-bed facility. It is expected that the healthcare centre will become the largest facility in the state once the proposed interventions are finalised and implemented.

Information & Public Relations Department building to be demolished

The hospital area will be augmented by demolishing the building of the Information and Public Relations Department which is located adjacent to it. Accelerating the plans, the detailed project report has been prepared for this scheme and the groundwork will be started soon. While the Balrampur Hospital is the state's largest centre presently with 760 beds, the Civil Hospital is all set to overtake it with a total of 800 beds.

Speaking about the upcoming developments, Director of Civil Hospital Dr. Subhash Chandra Sundriyal said that the administration has given its approval for the demolition of (Information & Public Relations Department) Suchna Bhawan. Besides, DPR has been prepared and the related construction work will start soon. While the plans were prepared earlier, the implementation got delayed due to the pandemic. Now, it is anticipated that the new facility will be ready in a period of two and a half years.

Special departments to be constituted across a range of domains

Amongst the new additions at the hospital, a 100 bed ICU facility has been proposed. Further, it has been proposed that the emergency beds at the centre will also be increased. While the OPD services will surely be amplified, super speciality departments will be set up across a range of domains including nephrology, gastroenterology, urology, neurology amongst others.
