Varsha Verma, a local of Lucknow, has deployed herself outside the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for the service of all COVID distraught families. While several people have confined themselves in the safety of their homes amid the pandemic sneers, this woman, packed in a PPE suit, is independently providing free carriage service for bodies of COVID-19 victims from hospitals to cremation grounds. A frontline hero, she is also helping the kin of the deceased at crematoriums and other burials grounds.
Meet Varsha Verma, the self-assigned COVID warrior
Varsha Verma is an author and a judo player, who experience personal loss when she lost one of her friends to COVID-19. While struck by this tragedy, she noticed that it was increasingly difficult to find a vehicle in the hospital or vicinity to ferry the body to the cremation grounds. Of the few resources she found, the drivers sought exorbitant fares, leaving her helpless.
This is when she decided that she personally would ensure that she is ferrying bodies to the cremation ground with the belief that it is inhuman to not be of service in these desperate times. Immediately after her friend’s funeral, she engaged in this work of providing these free trips. During the day, she shuttles continuously between the crematoriums, Lohia Hospitals, KGMU and sometimes to Baikunthadham or Gulala Ghat to Kakori, Malihabad tMohanlalganj.
On Wednesday, which was her fifth day of this service, she had already hired another car and arranged a driver to help the city folks as the COVID scare threatens These two vehicles are offering help to anybody and everybody who calls them and even waits outside hospitals to help the needy.
