To commemorate the birth anniversary of Sadhu Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani on November 25, the government of Uttar Pradesh has marked this day as Meatless Day. Owing to the same, all the meat shops and slaughterhouses in Lucknow and other UP cities remained today and the same will be followed every year. Notably, this day is also known as International Meatless Day to promote and celebrate vegetarianism.

In an attempt to promote the Doctrine of Non-Violence, the UP administration has decided to shut all the butcher houses and meat shops in the state on November 25. Significantly, this was the first time when the sale and slaughter of meat remained banned in the entire state on this occasion. Moreover, according to the order issued by the authorities, this rule will now be effective on birth anniversaries of people who promoted this doctrine. From now onwards, the sale of meat will be banned on Mahavir Jayanti, Buddh Jayanti, Gandhi Jayanti, Vaswani Jayanti and Shivratri too.

Notably, apart from Uttar Pradesh, Bengaluru's Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) also banned the sale and slaughter of meat within its limits on the occasion of 'Sadhu Vaswani Jayanti' today.
