Renovation kicks off in Hazratganj, festive joys clouded by worries for some

Hazratganj renovation brings festive concerns for shopkeepers

Varul M.

Renovation work has begun in Lucknow’s iconic shopping destination, Hazratganj, aimed at restoring its heritage charm. The project includes redesigned building facades, uniform signage, rhythmic lighting, and a refreshed colour palette of light peach and walnut.

The makeover also includes restructuring electric poles, removing encroachments, and upgrading footpaths and street furniture to align with the district’s renewed aesthetic.

Traffic Diversions and construction worries could dampen festive footfall

However, as the festive season draws near — when Hazratganj traditionally bustles with shoppers, lanterns, music and celebrations — shopkeepers are expressing concern. The worry is that traffic diversions, construction zones, and unclear signage will discourage visitors. Many say that people who do not already live in Lucknow may find navigating “the Ganj” during renovation both confusing and off-putting.

The fear is real: diverted routes, dust and disruption might pull away the festive crowd, hitting already tight business margins. Traders have urged authorities to coordinate well and issue clear maps, detour signage and public notices well in advance. If the renovation is to be a success, the balance is delicate — preserving heritage without pushing away the very footfall that defines Hazratganj’s spirit during festivals.
