SGPGIMS in Lucknow successfully completes 500 robotic procedures

The Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow acquired the high-tech robotic facility in April 2019. Ever since then, the robotic facility has enhanced the efficiency of the procedures, especially the complex ones. SGPGIMS has now made a new mark by completing over 500 successful robotic surgeries to date.

More about the robotic facility at SGPGIMS

Various departments of the institute including urology, gastrointestinal surgery, cardiovascular and endocrine surgery share the automated facility as it provides more precision, flexibility and control over conventional surgical methods. Reportedly, SGPGIMS is also the first government-run medical institute in the country to perform kidney transplantation robotically.

While these robotic surgeries can be get too expensive for obvious reasons, SGPGIMS offers the procedures to the public at a fraction of the cost charged by private hospitals.

How are robotic surgeries performed?

Robotic surgery, which is technically robot-assisted surgery, is an automated method which provides additional efficiency to surgeons while performing complex surgical procedures.

This is done through an advanced-grade robotic surgical system which includes a camera arm and three to four mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached to them. The surgeon further controls these arms through a computer console near the operating table.

Moreover, the computer console which is linked to the robotic system provides a high-definition, magnified, 3-dimensional (3D) view of the surgical section to the surgeon in charge.
