According to the Director of SGPGIMS, R.K. Dhiman, the Department of Haematology started a project 'Strategies towards comprehensive haemophilia care services' in 2019 to improve the existing treatment facilities in Uttar Pradesh. Funded by the National Health Mission (NHM), this project has seen the establishment of eight physiotherapy centres in different medical colleges across the state so far.

Reportedly, the newly inaugurated centre at Lucknow's PGI is also a part of this initiative. Additionally, two physiotherapists have also been posted by the National Health Mission at the Haemophilia Physiotherapy Unit.

Apart from this, the Department of Haematology has further set up a dedicated day-care facility for leukaemia patients undergoing chemotherapy to take care of their in-dwelling catheters (PICC Line) in order to decrease the risk of infections.

According to the Chief Medical Superintendent of SGPGIMS- Gaurav Agarwal, haemophilia is a congenital bleeding disorder that affects mostly men. People with this disorder have spontaneous bleeding into their joints, muscles or from injuries and the only suitable treatment is the infusion of clotting factors. Moreover, due to repeated episodes of bleeding into their joints, these patients suffer from physical disabilities. Haemophilia patients need regular physiotherapy and the new centre in Lucknow will prove to be beneficial for them.
