Special wards for transgender community to be reserved in Uttar Pradesh hospitals

Another step towards equality in Uttar Pradesh!

Drishti Mathur

As an initiative towards gender inclusivity, Uttar Pradesh is set to cater for special wards for the transgender community in every government hospital. Reportedly, the members of the transgender community will be issued identity cards that will help them benefit from different welfare schemes provided by the government, including the special wards.

Additionally, separate toilets for the transgender community will be set up in public places. This entire initiative will grant trans community members better necessities, supporting them in their endeavour to live a life with pride.

Prayagraj leads the way with 4 trans friendly hospitals

In Prayagraj, four hospitals have already set up five-bed special wards for transgender people. These are SRN Hospital, Motilal Nehru Divisional (Colvin) Hospital, and Tej Bahadur Sapru (Beli) Hospital, and Dufferin Hospital (District Women’s Hospital). The issuing of identity cards for members of the trans community has also begun.

Kaushalya Nandgiri, a member of UP Kinnar Welfare Board and Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhada, praised this initiative, saying it will help bring awareness to the public about the community.

It is only a matter of time before government hospitals in Lucknow, Kanpur and other metros in UP also make way for special wards for transgender folk.
