To reduce student stress, UP Schools introduce 10 'bagless days' for classes 6–8

This will break the academic grind with fun, hands-on workshops and field trips.

For students in Uttar Pradesh, the familiar weight of a school bag is getting a welcome break. The state has introduced 10 "bagless days" for grades 6 to 8, transforming classrooms into hubs of hands-on discovery. This initiative, part of the SCERT's "Anandam" (Joyful Learning) program, is all about swapping textbooks for creativity, hands-on learning, and real-world experiences.

The idea is to give students a break from the usual academic grind, allowing them to dive into skill-building workshops, field trips, and interactive activities that make learning feel like play.

UP's new vision for schools

On these designated days, students will attend school without books, engaging instead in hands-on activities. Every Saturday, dubbed "Masti Ki Pathshaala," will be dedicated to competitions, sports, and speech and debate events to foster confidence and teamwork.

The government hopes this structured break from routine will reduce student stress, nurture curiosity, and support holistic development by connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. The calendar for the 2025-26 academic year is already effective, with the designated days scheduled through February. By inviting parents to participate, the program hopes to build a community that values holistic growth, proving that the most important lessons don't always come from a book.
