Phase 1 polling picks pace in Uttar Pradesh, 35% voter turnout till 1 PM

The polling in the politically crucial state started at 7 am and with over 620 candidates in the fray.

The first phase of polling for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections kicked off on Thursday, with the state recording a voting turnout of 35% in 11 districts till 1 PM. Of the total 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, today marks the polling for 58 seats of phase I. Notably, a total of seven phases have been mapped out for the UP Assembly Polls.

UP Elections: Phase 1 to bellwether for remaining stages

As per reports, the district wise voter turn out has also picked up pace with, Agra recording an average of 35.93% voter turnout, Aligarh with 32.07%, Baghpat 38.01%, Bulandshahar 37.03%, Gautam Buddha Nagar saw 30.53%.

On the other hand, voting in Ghaziabad saw a 33.40% turnout, 39.97% in Hapur, 20.73% in Mathura, 36.26% in Meerut, 35.73% in Muzaffarnagar and the highest in Shamli at 41.16% till 1 PM, as per the EC statistics. As per reports, the voting will close today at 6 PM.

A total of 623 candidates are contesting, out of which 73 are females. As many as 2.28 crore voters, including 1.04 crore women, are eligible to vote in this phase at 26,027 polling booths across 10,853 polling stations in 11 districts. The phase I voting trend, in 58 constituencies of the state’s 11 districts, will be watched closely as the trendsetter for the other six phases.

Uttar Pradesh is home to around 20 crore people and is scheduled to vote in seven phases ending the battle on March 7. The counting of votes is set to begin on March 10.
