UP government launch 16-day drive against illicit trade and consumption of liquor

In an effort to address the negative consequences of illegal alcohol trafficking and production in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has initiated a 16-day campaign targeting these activities. The campaign, which began on December 21, coincides with the holiday season and aims to disrupt the flow of illicit liquor during this time. With this effort, the aims to reduce the harmful effects of illegal alcohol on public health and safety in the state.

Vigil to target deserted areas and buildings

In the past, illegal liquor-related activities have been reported in deserted places and buildings, including factories and RO plants, especially during the festive season. Targeting all such sources of such trade, concerned authorities have been tasked to maintain regular vigil and raids.

As per government spokespersons, strict action has been advised against those involved in acts of promoting, storing, and selling illegal liquor. Furthermore, anyone found to be guilty of being involved in such acts will be tried under different sections of IPC including the Gangsters' Act.

Towards a public participation approach

In order to make sure that these activities are kept at bay during the festival season, liquor stocks will be regularly screened at all stores, and barcodes will also be tallied. Additionally, all liquor stores are to ensure that CCTVs installed outside their stores are functional.

Moreover, the citizens have been asked to stay vigilant and report any suspicious movement of liquor, or people involved in the sale or manufacture, or possession of liquor on the toll-free number 14405.

Notably, people can also report such cases on WhatsApp number 9454466019 of the state excise department. The move is aimed at offering a safeguard to the social fabric of society.
