Uttar Pradesh takes a bold step, banning individuals under 18 from driving two-wheelers or four-wheelers. Those caught providing vehicles to minors now face serious consequences, including a three-year jail term and a hefty ₹25,000 fine.

This strict measure is designed not only to bolster the safety of young riders but also to put the brakes on unauthorized vehicle use by individuals below the legal driving age.

Alarming spike in cases of underage driving in India

It's crucial to highlight that as per Section 4 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, driving a motor vehicle in a public area in India is strictly prohibited for anyone under the age of 18. Despite the existing law, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of underage drivers in the country.

A 2022 report exposed a concerning trend—up to 90% of underage two-wheeler drivers in India often neglect wearing helmets. This lapse in safety measures has consequently contributed to a surge in road accidents.

Speaking to Knocksense, Mrs. Usha Tandon, whose 16-year-old son wants a scooter for himself, says, "I will definitely not allow my son to drive before he's the right age. It's scary listening to news of accidents every day. No matter how stubborn he is, my child will have to wait till 18 for a vehicle".
