Effective from March 4, civil bodies in Uttar Pradesh will now impose a fine of ₹50 to ₹2000 on people who fail to segregate waste at home before giving it to sanitation workers. In simpler words, waste segregation is basically sorting and separation of waste types to facilitate recycling and correct disposal.

This move comes as a part of the state-run recently-launched campaign, '10 Tak Door to Door', under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-Urban) to ensure 100% door-to-door collection and waste segregation across Uttar Pradesh.

The campaign is divided into three stages - the first was to request residents to segregate their waste; the second was their approval and awareness, which ends on March 3. In the final, third phase, legal actions will be taken against those who fail to comply and segregate their waste.

State Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) - Neha Sharma has already issued necessary instructions for mandatory implementation of the rule, to all employees of municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats. They will further conduct regular inspection of households from March 4 to March 31 to ensure compliance with the newly-laid rules.

Additionally, as part of this endeavour to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in Uttar Pradesh, strict actions will be taken against those who do not comply and segregate the garbage in all the urban bodies of the state.
