Uttar Pradesh will soon welcome its own B99 team as the state police will be endowed with personal body worn cameras and full body protectors. A major leap in the modernisation arena, a budget of ₹650 crores has been allotted to introducing hi-tech and modern policing tools and gears, similar to that of the NYPD. The UP personnel of 10 districts of the state will be armed with the tech gear.

Out of the aforementioned budget for the Uttar Pradesh police, ₹4.8 crores has been reserved for some 1,200 body cams and 1,650 full body protectors. ₹2.84 crores have been approved for 30,000 post-mortem kits.

Stepping into gear

Other technological advancements include the setting up of a dedicated technical lab in Kannauj, a forensic science lab (FSL) to help with EOW, SIT, ACO, and CB-CID investigations, and new forensic labs in Aligarh, Gonda, and Bareilly. Moreover, temporary field units will be organised in 66 districts.

"In addition, hi-tech social media monitoring cells and law and order quick response teams will be established in ten districts of the state," a department official said.

Armed against cyber crime

To fight cyber crime, cyber help desks have been formed at all of the 1,531 police stations of UP and thorough training has been provided to the employees. Additionally, a crime scene videography mobile app has been developed by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The app will initially be tested in Barabanki, Aligarh, and Muzaffarnagar districts.

"Action is being taken regarding construction of administrative buildings for cyber police stations in 18 police ranges. The executive body has been designated for seven regional cyber police stations, namely Varanasi, Jhansi, Basti, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur and Banda," the official added.
