Uttar Pradesh introduces WhatsApp-based e-challan system: Details

Here’s what vehicle owners must know.

Somya Agarwal

The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has rolled out a new WhatsApp chatbot service to instantly notify vehicle owners of e-challans via their mobile phones, with an option to pay. This initiative, operational in Lucknow, Kanpur and other UP cities, brings fines and payment options straight to your fingertips.

How the WhatsApp E-Challan System works

  • Automated alerts: Vehicle owners will receive e-challan notifications on their registered mobile numbers through a verified WhatsApp blue-tick chatbot (8005441222).

  • Instant payment options: The message includes a secure payment link, allowing users to pay directly via UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking.

  • Cross-verification available: Users can also check their challan status and download details from parivahan.gov.in.

  • Secure and official: Messages are sent through a government-approved gateway, ensuring authenticity and cyber safety.

Important reminder for all vehicle owners

  • Check your challan status on parivahan.gov.in

  • Pay outstanding dues only via official government platforms

  • Update your mobile number in your vehicle registration records

  • Do not respond to unverified links or third-party messages

A first in India: WhatsApp for E-Challans

This marks the first time a government department in India is using WhatsApp, a blue tick–verified channel, to deliver e-challan notices. And in case you missed it, all pending challans between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2021 were cancelled in June 2023 by the UP Government.

So, if you receive a message from 8005441222, don’t brush it aside. It’s official, it’s important, and paying attention could save you from legal hassles later.
