Maharashtra is set to roll out a new travel option with the introduction of 1 lakh bike taxis across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The move aims to provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional transport, offering both fuel-powered and electric two-wheelers. The bike taxi services will offer 60% cheaper fares than auto-rickshaws or traditional taxis. These services will be exclusively accessible through ride-hailing apps.
The Central Government approved the concept of bike taxis two years ago, leaving it to individual states to establish their own regulations. Following which, Maha Govenment gave a green light to the initiative in June last year, directing the transport department to draft the necessary rules. The department has now finalised its proposal, which is expected to gain cabinet approval later this month.
As per the proposal, ride-hailing app-based aggregators must operate at least 50 bikes within a 15-km radius. As per a Hindustan Times report, 30% of each fleet must be electric, with an annual increase of 10% until the entire fleet goes electric in seven years. Registration fees for operators will vary, with rates ranging from ₹1 lakh for fleets of 50 bikes to ₹5 lakh for fleets of 10,000 bikes. To ensure compliance and regulation, each bike taxi will sport a yellow number plate.
The plan faces resistance from auto-rickshaw and taxi unions, who are concerned about the increased competition. However, Maharashtra is determined to follow in the footsteps of states like Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, and Karnataka, where bike taxis are already operational.
