In a decision to reclaim 'green lungs' for its citizens, Mumbai will convert the historic Mahalaxmi Racecourse into a sprawling 120-acre public park, evoking the scale and spirit of New York's Central Park. The announcement outlined a transformative urban vision, assuring that the valuable land will remain free from permanent construction.

Instead, it will be thoughtfully developed with walking paths, cycling tracks, and peaceful seating areas, creating a vital recreational sanctuary for Mumbaikars to enjoy.

Mahalaxmi Racecourse to link with Coastal Road Park

This transformation was set in motion by a 2024 agreement that transferred the land from the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The RWITC will continue to operate horse racing on a separate 91-acre leasehold until 2053. A key part of the vision is to integrate the new park with the 170-acre open space created by the coastal road project via an underground tunnel, forming a nearly 300-acre contiguous green lung for Mumbai's residents.

The plan for the space itself has been ambitious. Earlier proposals from prominent architect Hafeez Contractor included an extensive underground complex beneath the central lawn, featuring sports facilities like squash courts, skating rinks, an athletics track, and a shooting range. A separate level below was envisioned as a massive parking facility for up to 5,000 vehicles.

RWITC to build new clubhouse

However, the final blueprint prioritises preservation over construction. While the RWITC has secured clearance to build a new clubhouse on its leased parcel, the BMC has committed its 120 acres solely to non-commercial, serene green space. This ensures the heart of the racecourse will become a permanent natural retreat for the city, safeguarding it from further development.
