In an exciting move to enhance commuter comfort, Maharashtra Government has announced plans to convert all local trains in Mumbai to air-conditioned (AC) rakes over the next decade. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) will introduce 238 AC rakes, with a focus on fast corridors within the next 18 months.

To kick off the transformation, the Western Railway will launch a new AC local train on Christmas Day, 2024, which will replace 10-12 non-AC services. With over 1.25 lakh daily passengers opting for AC travel, the demand for cooler and more comfortable rides is clear.

While 1.25 lakh passengers already opt for AC travel daily, affordability concerns loom large for many commuters. Balancing comfort with accessibility will be key as Mumbai’s local trains undergo this transformative journey.
