In addition to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the Maharashtra Government is exploring another location for the introduction of Pod Taxis, also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). The new plan is to link Mira-Bhayandar with Thane-Ghodbunder, aiming to improve connectivity between railway and metro stations. This development was confirmed on Tuesday.

Officials are confident that the pod car system, utilising Futran technology, will help tackle congestion issues in Maharashtra. They have also evaluated its potential deployment across several corridors, with an immediate focus on the Mira-Bhayandar Road. The system is expected to integrate seamlessly with the existing metro network, further enhancing connectivity in the region.

All about pod taxis:

  1. The pod car features a small turning radius, compact station design, and integrates smoothly with metro systems.

  2. Each pod accommodates up to 20 passengers, travelling at 60-70 km/h using onboard electric motors, operating 24/7.

  3. It is equipped with an onboard collision avoidance system and a 25-metre following distance.

  4. The pod car runs six metres above road level, with compact tracks and stations supported by 4-6 small pillars (<1m x 1m).

  5. It can transport over 15,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

  6. The pod taxi projects are being planned under a Public-Private Partnership mode. The estimated completion time is three years.
