Following driver protests, the government approved a steep fare hike.

Daily commuters in Mumbai and Pune will soon dig deeper into their pockets as the Maharashtra government has recommended a steep 50% hike in app-based cab fares. The base rate for Ola and Uber rides will rise from ₹16/km to ₹24/km in Mumbai and from ₹12/km to ₹18/km in Pune, a move triggered by driver protests over low earnings amid soaring fuel and maintenance costs.

How much more will you pay?

This decision comes after months of negotiations between driver unions and the state government, following protests for fairer earnings. Drivers argued that the previous fares were insufficient to cover rising fuel and maintenance costs.

  • Andheri to Worli: ₹302.4 to ₹453.6 (+₹151.2)

  • Terminal 2 to Vashi: ₹400 to ₹600 (+₹200)

  • Goregaon to Fort: ₹528 to ₹792 (+₹264)

  • Borivali to Fort: ₹656 to ₹984 (+₹328)

Fare hike relief for drivers, pain for commuters

Following driver union protests over unsustainable earnings, the government approved a steep fare increase. While cab operators welcome the boost amid rising costs, passengers face the brunt, many may switch to trains, buses, or carpooling to cut costs.

The Bombay High Court has banned protestors from disrupting Uber services, even as ride-hailing firms warn the price surge could backfire by reducing demand. The move risks shrinking Mumbai’s affordable cab options, potentially changing how the city commutes long-term.
