BMC imposes ban on new road excavations in Mumbai; sets May 31 deadline for concretisation

Residents can now report unauthorised road digging to local ward offices.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned new road excavations in Mumbai and set a strict deadline of May 31, 2025, for completing ongoing road concretisation work to avoid monsoon disruptions. The directive comes amid rising citizen complaints about frequent road digging, air pollution, and traffic disruptions.

Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani reiterated that excavation of newly constructed roads has been banned after February 22. The decision follows reports of contractors violating previous orders by digging up solid roads. Residents can now report any unauthorised excavation to their local ward offices.

The BMC is currently concretising 1,131 roads across Mumbai, covering approximately 440 kilometres in two phases. Officials have confirmed that before monsoon arrives, nearly 132.75 km (30% of ongoing work) will be completed. The initiative aims to address air pollution and reduce inconvenience to residents who have expressed frustration over prolonged excavations.
