Mumbai’s beloved Marine Drive is set for a major upgrade! Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved the replacement of ageing tetrapods that have been in place since the 1960s. Originally installed between 1960 and 1965, with some replacements between 1982 and 2002, these tetrapods are now deteriorating, some even damaged by Cyclone Nisarga. Made from M20 grade cement, they were designed to last 40 years, but their lifespan is nearly over.

The new tetrapods will be built with much stronger M40 grade cement, offering enhanced durability for next 100 years. The ₹43.61 crore project, due for completion by May 2025, is part of BMC’s efforts to protect Mumbai’s coastline from erosion. The tetrapods, which break the force of the waves, are essential in preventing soil erosion. The removal of tetrapods during the Coastal Road project had exposed parts of Marine Drive to direct wave impact, causing visible damage.

In addition to improving coastal protection, the new tetrapods aim to address one more concern. Two years ago, residents along Marine Drive complained about vibrations from crashing waves, prompting the BMC to temporarily reinstall tetrapods. The new structures will provide both stronger protection against erosion and mitigate such disturbances.
