BMC's strict action on pigeon feeding; ₹1.24 lakh collected in fines across Mumbai

BMC's crackdown has sparked protests, mainly from the Jain community.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ramped up its crackdown on pigeon coops and feeding after increasing concerns about health risks from pigeon droppings and feathers. Despite government orders banning the feeding of pigeons, many continue the practice. In response, BMC has penalised 249 individuals for feeding pigeons between July 13 and August 3, collecting a total of ₹1.24 lakh in fines.

A fine of ₹500 is imposed on violators, with Dadar seeing the highest number of offender, 67 people were fined ₹29,900.

Protests erupt over pigeon feeding ban

The civic body has also targeted pigeon lofts, with 51 coops in Mumbai, some over 100 years old, ordered to be shut down as part of an immediate campaign launched on July 2. The BMC's swift action follows an official directive to curb the public health hazard posed by pigeons.

However, the BMC's crackdown has triggered protests, especially from the Jain community, which vehemently opposes the ban. Members gathered at the Dadar Kabootar khana to voice their dissent over the closure of the popular pigeon feeding spot. Tensions escalated as protestors dismantled the plastic and bamboo barriers set up by the civic authorities to enforce the court-mandated ban.

The protests also included a 'Shantidoot Yatra' from Colaba to the Gateway of India. Recently, an FIR was filed in Mahim for pigeon feeding. Despite the growing backlash, BMC remains firm in its stance, with more punitive actions expected in the future.
