Western Railway is set to add a new air-conditioned (AC) local train to its Mumbai fleet next month, with a likely debut on Christmas Day -- mirroring the festive launch of the city’s first AC train on December 25, 2017. The modernised train, currently undergoing mandatory testing at Kandivli yard, promises enhanced connectivity and comfort for commuters.

Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the new AC rake will add 10 to 12 trips to the suburban network, addressing the growing demand for air-conditioned services. Currently, Western Railway operates 7 AC trains out of its eight-rake fleet, serving around 1.24 lakh daily passengers, which accounts for 4% of its ridership. This new addition will be the eighth AC rake in Western Railway's fleet, strengthening its existing network of 111 rakes.

With its ability to generate significant revenue and meet passenger needs, this addition marks a step forward in Western Railway’s commitment to improving commuter experiences.
