How lack of awareness cost Mumbai's Juhu Beach its Olive Ridley Turtle nesting season

Many people approached the turtle, with some even knocking on its shell.

An Olive Ridley Turtle made a rare appearance at Juhu Beach on Tuesday night, attempting to lay eggs. Unfortunately, disturbances from onlookers forced the turtle to return to the sea without nesting. Juhu Buzz shared a video, showing the turtle navigating the beach, but the flashing lights from cameras likely caused distress and led her to leave.

The turtle's visit highlights the need for greater awareness among beachgoers. Unaware of the significance of the turtle's journey, many people approached her, with some even knocking on her shell. It’s vital to give these creatures the space they need to nest.

Olive ridley turtles may be small, but they play a crucial role in ocean health. Protecting their nesting sites ensures the survival of a species that helps maintain marine balance. We hope the turtle, or another, returns to Juhu Beach, and that future visitors will show more respect for this rare event.
