In honour of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's death anniversary, a public holiday is being observed in Mumbai and its suburbs today, i.e., December 6. As per an official circular, released on Tuesday, all government and non-government offices alongside schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain shut on Wednesday.

This day, also known as Mahaparinirvan Diwas, pulls in hordes of Ambedkar's followers from all around India to Dadar's popular Chaitya Bhoomi. Given the rush, the authorities have issued several traffic restrictions till December 7 and introduced additional means of transportation as well.

Further, the circular also states that the state government had declared Anant Chaturdashi and Dahi Handi as local holidays for Mumbai and its suburbs, back in 1996 and 2007, respectively. So from 2023, Mahaparinirvan Diwas is also being added to the list of local holidays.

Born in Madhya pradesh's Mhow town (now renamed as 'Dr. Ambedkar Nagar') on April 14, 1891, Dr. Ambedkar was the first Law & Justice Minister of Independent India. He breathed his last on December 6, 1956. Dr. Ambedkar's mortal remains were cremated at Dadar's Chaitya Bhoomi, where a sea of humanity converges every year to pay homage to him.
