In a bid to curb ticketless travel, Mumbai’s Central Railway (CR) is rolling out the ‘Lucky Yatri Yojana’ next week, offering cash prizes to commuters with valid tickets or season passes. Under the scheme, one lucky passenger will win ₹10,000 daily, while a bumper prize of ₹50,000 will be awarded to a weekly winner.
Winners will be randomly selected by ticket checkers at stations and must present a valid ticket or pass to claim their reward.
How it works?
Daily Prize: ₹10,000 to one lucky ticket holder
Weekly Bumper Prize: ₹50,000 for another winner
Winners will be randomly selected during ticket checks at stations
Open to all classes—daily or monthly pass holders eligible
With 40 lakh commuters traveling daily, nearly 20% ride without tickets, resulting in 4,000-5,000 fines each day. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, said the Lucky Yatri Yojana aims to reward honest travellers while deterring ticketless travel. The eight-week scheme, fully sponsored by FCB Interface Communication Pvt Ltd, comes at no extra cost to passengers.
Commuters have welcomed the move, seeing it as a fun and rewarding way to encourage compliance. CR has also introduced mobile ticketing apps and vending machines to make ticket purchases more convenient, ensuring a smoother travel experience.
