Prior to the revocation of Article 370, land ownership was restricted to permanent residents of the valley.

Maharashtra is poised to become the first state in India to acquire land in Jammu and Kashmir, to build a tourist 'Bhawan'. This initiative, marking a pivotal moment in the country's economic integration journey, follows the revocation of J&K's special status under Article 370 in August 2019.

The Maharashtra Bhawan, sanctioned by the state cabinet and approved by the J&K Government, will be constructed on a 2.5-acre plot of land at Ichgam, near Srinagar Airport in central Kashmir's Budgam district. The acquisition, facilitated with a payment of ₹8.16 crore, signifies a paradigm shift in inter-state collaboration.

A move towards inter-state collaboration

Prior to the annulment of the special status, exclusive rights to land acquisition were reserved for permanent residents of the former state. However, the government had the authority to lease land for extended durations, extending up to 99 years, to industries and non-native individuals.

Now, this facility for tourists from Maharashtra, aims to revitalise Kashmir's economy, create employment opportunities, and empower local communities. Additionally, this pioneering initiative also opens doors for other states to harness India's diverse landscapes for mutual benefits.

Besides constructing Maharashtra Bhawan in Kashmir, the state government intends to build another in Ayodhya, providing improved and cost-effective lodging for tourists and devotees from the state.
