India's first high-speed rail project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, also known as Bullet Train, is progressing rapidly, with the First Phase expected to be operational by 2026.
This ambitious venture promises to offer a seamless, world-class travel experience, redefining intercity connectivity. The foundation stone of the project was laid down on September 14, 2017. Here are some of the key features of India’s first bullet train project:
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor spans 508 km, with 348 km in Gujarat and 156 km in Maharashtra
Speed: 320 km/h
Stations: 12 total—8 in Gujarat, 4 in Maharashtra (Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Sabarmati)
Travel time: 2.07 hours with limited stops, 2.58 hours with all stops
Features: Centrally located stations with modern interiors, ample seating, clear signage, high-quality restrooms, nurseries, and baggage lockers. First-class passengers enjoy exclusive business lounges
Accessibility: Wheelchair-friendly designs, lowered ticket counters with braille, tactile tiles, and dedicated washrooms for differently-abled passengers
Unique features: 21 km will be underground including a 7-km long sea tunnel and 5-kms of mountain tunnels
According to officials, the target has been set to conduct the first trial run
of the bullet train, between Surat and Bilimora by 2026. Once fully operational, India will join the ranks of 15 countries which have high-speed train networks.
