Both runways at the Mumbai Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Terminal will remain shut on May 10, an airport spokesperson informed. All operations on the runways 14/32 and 09/27 will be suspended for about 6 hours, from 11 AM to 5 PM, to conduct routine pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work, the official said. As per reports, this is a yearly practice directed by the CSMIA to ensure passengers’ safety.

The airport shutdown

The Mumbai Airport runway closure on May 10 is a customary shutdown, observed annually to ensure monsoon-compatible systems here. As is already known by all, the Mumbai rains are temperamental, often causing clogging and flooding. The repair and maintenance work here ensures that the incessant downpour does not block the runways too.

The contingency plan, however, will also affect the movement of flights. The Airport will be shut from 11 AM to 5 PM, next Tuesday disrupting flight schedules too. While the airport has issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) to all stakeholders in order to manage flights and reduce passengers' inconvenience, flyers are urged to check their flight status before making a move to the airport.

All operations at the Mumbai airport will be duly restored as per schedule post 5 PM on May 10, the spokesperson concluded.
