The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai on Friday (today), forecasting light to moderate rainfall, followed by an Orange Alert on Saturday (tomorrow), warning of heavy to very heavy showers. According to IMD, an upper cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is driving the renewed rainfall across the state. This weather system is expected to intensify showers across multiple districts over the coming days.

Brief dry spell ends

After witnessing its earliest monsoon onset in 75 years with record rainfall in May, Mumbai experienced a notable lull over the past two weeks. The pause in rainfall led to rising daytime temperatures, peaking at 34°C on Thursday. Meteorologists attribute this break to the absence of strong monsoon systems such as robust westerlies and trough formations.

IMD further forecasts that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue across parts of Maharashtra until June 17. As the monsoon systems regain strength, residents have been advised to prepare for waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localised flooding, particularly over the weekend.

Red alert for Ratnagiri, Orange for Raigad and Sindhudurg

On Friday, Ratnagiri district will remain under a Red Alert, signalling extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Raigad and Sindhudurg districts have been placed under an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
