Mumbai Coastal Road | New 7.5 km promenade, vehicular underpass & 20 PuPs to open before monsoon

The promenade will have palm trees, shrubs, jogging tracks, and seating areas.

Mumbai's ambitious Coastal Road project is set to enhance public access with two major additions before this year's monsoon season. A sprawling 7.5-km promenade and a 550-meter vehicular underpass will soon complement the existing 10.58-km high-speed corridor that currently connects Marine Drive to the Bandra Worli Sea Link. According to civic officials, the landscaping and infrastructure works are in the final stages and will be completed by May.

Additionally, officials confirm that 20 pedestrian underpasses (PuPs) will link the landside to the promenade, opening once landscaping is complete.

Project to offer walkways, green patches & faster routes

The ₹13,000-crore project, built by reclaiming 111 hectares of the Arabian Sea, will dedicate 70 hectares to public spaces and promenades. The new walkway, running between Priyadarshini Park (PDP) and Worli, will include jogging tracks, seating areas, and lush green patches with palm trees and native shrubs sourced from nurseries across India. It will be 20 meters wide and feature tactile tiles for accessibility.

Additionally, the underpass connecting Dadar and Prabhadevi to the coastal road, will ease congestion by providing a direct route to the western suburbs or south Mumbai. The tunnel will pass beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, linking J K Kapur Chowk to the vehicular interchange at Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk.

Once open, the promenade will offer pedestrians a views of the Arabian Sea, with 20 pedestrian underpasses (PuPs) providing seamless access.
