The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to launch the last girder of the bow-string bridge, which would serve as a crucial link between the Mumbai Coastal Road and Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Scheduled between April 18 and 19, this landmark event signifies a significant milestone in the project's progression.

BMC adapts bridge design for community safety

With the arrival of a 136-metre-long bow-string girder at the site, the gap between the southbound arm of the road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is expected to be bridged by Wednesday. This pre-fabricated structure is being meticulously manoeuvred into place via barges, anchored at the Worli worksite on the Arabian Sea.

Pawan Padiyar, planning head of Hindustan Construction Company, the project's executing agency, emphasised the completion of the first phase of MCRP upon the girder's launch. The intricate process, commenced in February, involves meticulously assembling and positioning the girders atop foundation pillars, undertaken amidst the challenges of Worli's shallow waters and dense bedrock.

Post-girder launch, the focus will shift to asphalt road construction, aiming for full road operationality by May-end, beyond the current weekday 8 AM- 8 PM schedule. The bridge's design overhaul, from traditional pillars to 'bowstring' girders, illustrates BMC's adaptability amidst community demands, ensuring both functionality and navigational safety for the fishing community.
