The Western Railway suburban network is poised for another upgrade with the completion of vital land acquisition for a new rail corridor between Kandivli and Borivli. This milestone marks a major step forward in expanding the suburban network.
After overcoming legal challenges, 424.5 square meters of private land in Borivli have been secured, paving the way for rapid progress on the project alongside operational tracks.
The project is part of a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade, including the addition of fifth and sixth lines between Bandra Terminus and Borivli. While the fifth line is already operational, the sixth line is under phased construction. Key sections have been completed, including a 9-kilometer stretch from Bandra Terminus to Goregaon in November 2023 and a 4.5-kilometer segment from Goregaon to Kandivli in October 2024.
Railway officials report notable progress, such as the completion of an elevated booking office on the east side of Kandivli station. Current work focuses on upgrading Bridge No. 61 with pre-stressed concrete slabs and conducting earthwork during night blocks to minimise disruptions to daily train services.
Once completed, the project will significantly enhance rail capacity, improve punctuality, and provide a smoother commute for Mumbai’s growing passenger base. With these upgrades, the Western Railway suburban network promises to deliver a more efficient and comfortable travel experience for Mumbaikars.
