To accommodate more commuters during peak hours on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd is set to launch a new shuttle service between Andheri and Ghatkopar stations. This line is one of the busiest in the Mumbai Metro network, with commuters often facing long waits during rush hour.
The shuttle service was successfully trialled on March 6, during which alternate trains ran between Versova and Andheri, while others continued to Ghatkopar. Per reports, more trials are planned to assess the prospects ahead and generate feedback. An MMOPL official stated, "We tested a new train schedule to assess the possibility of boosting frequency during peak hours on the Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch. The results were encouraging, and we are now analysing the impact to optimise future operations."
The shuttle service is expected to accommodate an additional 5,000 passengers during peak hours. Of the 60,000 daily commuters on Metro One, approximately 52,500 travel between Andheri and Ghatkopar, with the majority of them set to benefit from the new service. The new service will also reduce the headway from 220 seconds to 205 seconds, increasing capacity by over 8%.
Currently, Metro One operates about 430 trips on weekdays, with services running from 5:30 am to 11:25 pm from Versova and until 11:50 pm from Ghatkopar.
