Mumbai’s Metro Line 3 is on the brink of a major milestone as it approaches its final testing phase. The Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will commence trials next week, a critical step before the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) gives the green light.

This pivotal testing phase is the last major hurdle before the ₹37,000 crore project can receive the green light from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). If all goes well, Mumbaikars could be riding the swanky new metro trains by late July or mid-August!

Know about the Phase-Wise deployment plan

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has started installing equipment for oscillation trials, which will assess the metro line's performance. These trials, expected to last several days, will provide critical data for the next steps. Once completed, MMRC will seek an official inspection from the CMRS. The crossover at Acharya Atre Chowk will facilitate trains reversing towards the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Metro 3 promises a game-changing upgrade to Mumbai's transit network. Connecting 6 major commercial suburbs, 30 office complexes, 12 educational institutes, 11 hospitals, 10 transport nodes, and both airports, it is poised to slash travel times significantly.

Here are the details on Phase-Wise Opening:

  • Project Cost: ₹37,000 Cr

  • Phased Approach: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is opening the corridor in three stages.

    Phase I: Seepz to BKC

    Phase II: Extending to Worli

    Phase III: Reaching Cuffe Parade

  • Operational Timeline:

Phase I: Aarey to BKC by end of July or mid-August

Phases II & III: BKC to Cuffe Parade by October

  • Station Details:

    • Phase I: Eight stations from Seepz to BKC

    • Phase II: Six stations from Dharavi to Worli

    • Phase III: Eleven stations from Worli to Cuffe Parade

Construction underway at Girgaon and Kalbadevi stations

While Girgaon and Kalbadevi stations are still works-in-progress, authorities have confirmed that services can commence without waiting for their completion. In total, the corridor will deploy 31 rakes operating from Aarey Depot.

As Mumbai inches closer to its Metro 3 dream, the successful oscillation trials and safety clearances will mark a pivotal milestone.
